Nelson 'Madiba' Mandela finally bows out.

Former South African president, Nelson Mandela is dead. The anti apartheid activist who became the first black South African president died around 5pm yesterday aged 95.

Mandela spent 27years of his life time in prison on allegations of planning to over trow the then white dominated government.

Mandela spent 18 years of his prison term in a Robbin island prison. During his incarceration, he was infected with tuberculosis which culminated in a protracted lungs problems he suffered until his death yesterday.

During his court trial, Mandela seized the opportunity to deliver a monumental speech part of which read:

" I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.  It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die"

Mandela's departure has generated a lot of reactions worldwide. In a sorrow laden voice, South African president Jacob Zuma announced that:

"Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father,"

"What made Nelson Mandela great is precisely what made him human."


During his life time, Mandela made some notable quotes:

" when a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore,  why I will sleep for eternity."

" There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere and many of us have walked through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reached the mountaintop of our desires."

" If United States of America or Britain is having elections, they do not ask for observers from Africa or Asia. But when we have elections, they want observers. "

Mandela died in his Johannesburg home on December 5 2013.
